Because I work in the TV biz, I see my own station's ratings every couple of months. I am always fascinated to see how many people are watching Local News 8 and at what times they are watching. We have some pretty awesome ratings so it makes it fun to monitor.
Knowing how the whole ratings system works makes it so interesting to see how all the TV shows are doing and how many millions are watching each program. To think 10 percent of Americans are watching American Idol on Tuesday nights never ceases to amaze me!
But I have recently discovered another little tidbit about Americans when it comes to who is watching what. Avatar, E.T., Independence Day and many other movies involving extra terrestrials all do very well in the box office, but on TV most people are not interested in shows with aliens or science fictional themes.
ABC's 'V', and No Ordinary Family, and NBC's show The Event are all on the chopping block for renewal next season due to low ratings. What do they all have in common? They involve aliens or super powers. I guess people aren't interested in watching TV programs that aren't very realistic. Which is too bad cause I actually like all of those shows. :(
The top rated shows are all believable reality TV or dramas. Dancing with the Stars, American Idol, NCIS, CSI, they are the top rated shows and none of them include ideas that are so far fetched you know they are not real.
SO if you're worried your favorite TV show may not be around next fall, check out to see how its ratings look at tvbythenumbers.com
Oh no! I love The Event.
