I’m the Weatherman!

As kid I watched the news every weekday. It was a family rule that we could only watch the news during the middle of the week. My mom didn’t want us kids wasting time watching TV instead of doing homework. In junior high I joked about being a weatherman when I grew up, but I never actually thought I would…

So after being a reporter for nearly a year my news director came into the newsroom one day and asked if any of us reporters had any desire to learn how to be a weather forecaster as a substitute when the other forecasters were out of town over the holidays. I jumped at the offer. It sounded like fun and I figured the more skills I have, the more marketable I am for my next job. Right?

So I began training in November to prepare for when I would take the green screen during the Christmas season. But even before I had the chance to forecast one show my news director pulled me in his office and told me they were going to make me the weekend weather anchor.

I was not planning on doing the weather thing on a regular basis when I said I wanted to learn how to be a weather forecaster. Nonetheless, I am, and I LOVE it! It wasn’t even that bad having to wake up at 3 o'clock in the morning to substitute for the morning shows. I actually liked it because I got off work at one in the afternoon. Now that I am forecasting for the weekend shows it kind of breaks up the week.

I love it so much I am thinking I may want to go back to school (ugh) and get a degree in meteorology. I am going to take the next couple of months to think about if it’s something I really want to do. It could open up a lot more doors for the future.

As for now I still have a lot of room for improvement.

  1. you could do it online, that's what I've considered and it seems everyone else in the industry has certified that way too

  2. Yeah, I've already looked into that. I wouldn't go back to school full time, I would just do online courses part time while I am working.
